A Happy Holiday and Feelings of Gratitude!

When I came home from my regular weekly hockey game the other evening, I was struck by how warm and Christmassy our house felt as I came in the front door. This got me to thinking about how grateful I am for all that I have.

  • I have my health which allows me to enjoy all of the other blessings in my life.
  • I have a partner who loves me, who believes in me more than I sometimes believe in myself, who sees me the way I have always wanted to be seen, and with whom every day is an absolute pleasure.
  • I have the treasure of my boys, with whom I enjoy strong and close relationships. Why I even get invited to play shinny with my 24 year old and his friends. That means a lot to me (and yes, I can keep up).
  • I enjoy a close relationship with my sister who now lives downstairs in our home, and who has somehow managed to work with me for almost 30 years.
  • I have my collection of friends, relationships that go back to Grade 2 in some cases, and others that have come along in middle school, high school, university, and during the working years. I’ve lost a couple to cancer, but their memory and their impact on my life remains powerful.
  • I have a new extended family, real people that I truly like and enjoy spending time with.
  • I get to play this great game of real life monopoly which I love, and which I choose to play for others as well as myself. I was blessed with an extraordinary and uninterrupted record of investment success for several decades until the financial crisis and aftermath, and while that was hard to endure, it did not break me, and I’ve come back from it both stronger and wiser. I know my best is yet to come.

For all of these reasons, and others that will become obvious in the near future, I lead a blessed life for which I am truly grateful. I hope all of you have similar reasons to feel blessed in your own lives, and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

P.S. After I wrote this blog I got what seems like the flu for the second time in as many weeks (maybe I’m overtraining). In addition, we had a small fire in our house, which although it did only minimal damage scared the shit out of me because it threatened much of what I am grateful for. At first these subsequent events shook me out of my “grateful mood”, but then they ultimately made me even more grateful and even more aware of how fragile these things can be.
